Is your phone use going to have an impact on your baby’s birth?
Your phone is rarely out of your hand. Checking Facebook religiously because God forbid you’d miss what Linda ate for her breakfast. And now you’ve discovered Instagram stories your time is never your own.
Don’t worry I’m exactly the same. I posted on my Facebook group not so long ago about how I’m rarely apart from my phone. And yes that does mean scrolling though FB when I’m around my kids too. I’ve had big guilt about this before but I’m allowing myself to be human and giving myself the kindness we all deserve.
Anyway, lets back to your phone use. Your phone use now you’re pregnant.
When you have this compulsion to look at your phone you are never really switching off, properly relaxing. How often do you end a long day by sinking into the sofa and then aimlessly scrolling? Time flies, you think you’ve been relaxing but have you really?
Being relaxed during your baby’s birth will make a massive difference. Muscles that are relaxed work more easily and more comfortably. Plus being relaxed puts us in a far better emotional state, our stress levels reduce and all the lovely hormones of labour can do their thing.
But the ability to become relaxed takes practice. The more we do it, the better at it we become. Sitting, scrolling our phones is not relaxing. Our minds are racing and our brains are working hard to absorb everything we are being exposed to.
Another thing about our scrolling habit is that with social media, we are never truly in control of what we see. When we are pregnant we are often a target for scare stories about birth. This create the negative expectation of birth that so many women have. And with this comes the fear.
Fear has a massive impact on birth. Fear creates tension and when we are tense we can’t be relaxed and like I said above being relaxed will make thing easier. As well as this fear create the fight or flight response, the incredible response our bodies have when our mind suspects danger. This gives us a huge hit of energy to our arms and legs to escape. We can’t ‘escape’ birth and this will simply slow things down as the energy is going to the wrong bits.
So we can stop people telling us the stories but we can’t ‘unsee’ what we see or read on social media. Have a think about what you are seeing on social media about birth? How is it making you feel? If it’s making you feel nervous or even making you dread birth you need to do something about it.
So what can you do?
No way am I going to suggest going cold turkey. I’d be a massive hypercrit!!!
Here are a few ways of enabling your phone use to support a positive birth:
- If there are certain groups, pages or even people that share things about birth that are not making you feel good, unfollow them. Simple.
- Add some positive things to your newsfeed by following some positive birth pages. Feel free to find my Facebook page here. The way that Facebook works is it shows you more of the stuff you seem to interact with. If you click on certain posts it will show you more of similar ones. This is great when you are wanting to create a positive mindset surrounding birth.
- Listen to your mind and body. If you are tired or struggling to find a sense of calm, put your phone down. Turn off the TV and take some long deep breaths.
